I recently ordered 3 figure 8 puffers and they arrived Tuesday. All three are in a 30 gal breeder tank along with 3 mollies. One of the puffers has ich. They were held and shipped in freshwater. My tank currently has a salinity of 1.003, and the puffers were acclimated to their new home for about an hour. All three ate the first night and last night as well. I have raised the tank temp to 79 F, and plan on slowly raising the salinity a bit more. Hoping the salt and increased temp will kill off the ich since it originated in a fw system. Any suggestions on treatment?

I usually use paragaurd and have had good results with it. Since treating with salt and heat then wait and see how it goes first. Fat Homer Fat Homer

Thanks. Hoping the heat and salt will take care of it. How do puffers handle Paraguard?

spotfin spotfin what you got planned sounds good except the temp seems a bit low to kill the ich, normally one would recommend temps of close to 32’C / 89.5’F (if the fish can tolerate the heat for around 2 weeks)...

The other option is to use Paraguard as kno4te kno4te mentioned above if you dont want to mess with temps / have plants in your tank?

Also they seem to handle paraguard okay, just do half dose to begin with and monitor to make sure there are no ill effects (although shouldnt be any)...

I can bump the heat more. Do you think figure 8s can handle 89 ?
There is 1 anubias and a few java ferns in the tank.
Will try to track down some paraguard to have on hand. Are puffers ok with this medicine? I’ve never used it before.

Should be fine with the 89 degree temp. Keep a powerhead with it. Most tolerate paragaurd but puffers usually need to be dosed at half strength.

I have a Figure 8 and have used Ich-X in the past.

I would start with 85 degrees and salt. All the temp is doing is increasing the life cycle rate of Ich allowing the salt treatment to be more effective. I only ended up using a couple doses of Ich-X in the 48 hour window, pretty much a half dose.

Should clarify a temp of 86 is good enough to speed up the life cycle. No need to bump up to 89.

Pretty much as said above, keep the tank aerated to ensure there is enough dissolved oxygen in the tank with the higher temps...

-edit-

I should have also been clearer in saying keep it at around 32’c for first few days then drop to around 30’c for remainder of treatment...
