My lfs labeled it as, "Trachelyoperus Sp". I searched on google images and found that the label was very likely a typo error for "Trachelyopterus".

Fish from that species doesn't seem to match the description of the fish in question. The fish in question is vastly different from the ones that i got from googling the scientific name.

My co-workers say that the fish is the gulper catfish, but i highly doubt so. Gulper catfish seem to look a little different aswell.

It could be also Trachelyopterus sp. But this fish is in very bad condition.

I agree with the OP. I too think it is the iron head catfish aka Trachycorystes trachycorystes. Could be another species from that genus but we never see them in the aquarium trade.

All the Trachelyopterus species have a pattern, none are just black, for one obvious reason why this guy cannot be a Trachelyopterus: https://www.planetcatfish.com/common/family.php?family_id=22

Forget the gulper. That's not even close (relatively speaking).

I don't see a bad condition. Just a bit thin.

I agree black driftwood catfish ( common name )
I just got mine few weeks back, very interesting catfish to watch sleep, mine tends to lay on or against anything and at times looks dead...
Pretty cool looking when he does swim around.

I don't remember the growth rate off the top of my head. It can be gaged by the dates on the posts where sizes are indicated on our thread.
