In 1965, at the height of his fame as an artist, Warhol announced his retirement from painting in favor of film making. He staged his farewell with an installation at Leo Castelli gallery the following year. One room consisted of nothing but wallpaper featuring a fluorescent pink cow. In the other, metallic silver balloons filled with helium floated through the gallery space and could be interacted with by the viewer.
ANDY WARHOL COW WALLPAPER
In 1965, at the height of his fame as an artist, Warhol announced his retirement from painting in favor of film making. He staged his farewell with an installation at Leo Castelli gallery the following year. One room consisted of nothing but wallpaper featuring a fluorescent pink cow. In the other, metallic silver balloons filled with helium floated through the gallery space and could be interacted with by the viewer. Warhol's longtime collaborator Gerard Malanga had found photographs which were the basis for the screenprints, all printed on wallpaper between 1966 – 1976.
"‘The idea to use a picture of a cow’s head reportedly stemmed from a comment by the dealer Ivan Karp that no one painted pastoral scenes any more. Warhol’s response was to find a picture of a cow in an old agricultural magazine and have it silkscreened as wallpaper".
Andy Warhol created 4 Cow screenprints on wallpaper in different color combinations, the first in pink and yellow was exhibited at Leo Castelli Gallery in 1966, the second in brown and blue for the Whitney Museum in 1971, the third in yellow and blue in 1971 and the last in pink and purple for an exhibition at the Modern Art Pavilion in Seattle, Washington, from November, 1976-January 9, 1977.
This set comprises 2 prints, the second and forth versions of the Cow screenprint on wallpaper. Both are authenticated on the verso with the official stamps from the Estate of Andy Warhol and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and numbered along with the Initials "TJH" (Tim J. Hunt)
