The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway

1975 World Tour
Coauthors: Jeffrey Shaw, Theo Botschuijver

Production: Eventstructure Research Group, Amsterdam

The band Genesis commissioned The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway to provide a pictorial multimedia backdrop to their concert performance of the same name. Using three pairs of programmable synchronized Kodak Carousel slide projectors, more than two thousand slides were projected onto three screens installed over the full length of the stage behind the band.

The work used narrative sequences of images that freely interpreted the themes of Peter Gabriel's song cycle to provide a continuous panoramic visual counterpoint and accompaniment to the live stage performance.

A custom-developed laser-wand enabled Peter Gabriel to point a dynamic cone of light into the audience. A number of inflatable event structures were also designed for this concert.

Taken together, the slide projections, laser projections, inflatable costumes and kinetic stage lighting were a groundbreaking experiment in total theatre, merging live performance with multimodal staging that translated Peter Gabriel's sophisticated musical narrative into a visceral, memorable multimedia experience for the audience.
