Lost an emu? Large flightless bird found in Sarasota County

An emu was found wandering Wednesday afternoon in Sarasota County.

Animal Services took custody of the emu that was located in Deer Hollow, near Fruitville Road and Interstate 75, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.

The emu, a large flightless bird of Australia, is being kept at an animal shelter.

Anyone who lost an emu can call Animal Services at 861-9501. To claim the emu, proof of ownership must be shown.
