Walk back into the Space Age with Moon Boots, a new fashion favourite
After Uggs and Doc Martens, Moon Boots are the latest footwear trend that has made their return from the early aughts. Their resurgence can be credited to our beloved fashion idol’s nostalgia-filled Instagram pictures. Coming into the fashion scene in the 1960s aka the Space Age era, Moon Boots were literally inspired by the shape of an astronauts’ anti-gravity boots during the Apollo 11 moon landing mission. The outcome of this inspiration was a thick-soled, waterproof boot ideal for harsh weather conditions.
Designed and made by Italian entrepreneur Giancarlo Zanatta, the boots were created specifically to provide a firm grip and insulation when walking in the snow. But let’s be honest, over time, they’ve become less about function and more about fashion. Since its ascension from space travel to coveted footwear, during the 2000s, we saw many it-girls of fashion like Paris Hilton and Victoria Beckham sporting this pleasantly absurd choice of footwear.
Recently, model Hailey Beiber was pictured against a snow-covered mountain backdrop in a lacy pair of Victoria Secret undies and a pair of pink Moon boots. Similarly, Kendall Jenner took to Instagram to share her picture donning a pair of chunky Moon boots paired with a bikini. Well, it is clear then, the Moon Boots as ugly as they maybe are THE outfit.
