Varför - därför

Rate this book

Th fifth, and so far final volume in Jockum Nordström's strange and wonderful series of graphic novels for young readers. Here he goes whole hog on the more adult themes and, among other things, starts and ends with poems by Werner Aspenström, adds instructions on how to do wallpapering, has a spread with old photos of harbours when Sailor talks about his past experiences, and so on.

Varför - därför (Why - Because) is strange from the point of view that this is a children's book, and sometimes I feel that this could very easily have been a graphic novel for adult readers used to, say the bleak comics by Gunnar Lundkvist. On the other hand, I would love if more artists and writers making comics for children would dare be so free and of want of a better word, artistic in their endeavours.

I really appreciate that these classics have been given a deluxe, hardcover treatment and that all five are now available again. I realise that I forgot them when doing a big survey of Swedish children's comics in Bild & Bubbla a few issues back, and will make sure that they will be included in future endeavours to highlight qualitative children's comics.
