Its a comic book adaptation of Ralph Bakshis cartoon movie Lord of the Rings (1979).
Writing an adaptation of a work from a different medium can be tricky business. Writing an adaptation out of adaptation, doubly so. And same goes for reviewing the damn thing. Should I take into account Tolkien's original work at all, or just judge this story by the merits of how well it manages Ralph Bakshi's animated adaptation? Or just forget about all that and talk about how good or a bad comic it is in its own right?
Honestly, it's not that good however I look at it. As an adaptation of the original Lord of the Rings, it's had to cut off far too much to be worth much anything, including (infamously) the entire second half. As a wholly independent work - to some theoretical individual that hasn't even heard of Tolkien before now - its pacing is all over the place, its characters and settings and the story itself not all too well defined, and, as was already mentioned, it cuts itself off midway through and ends on an unsatisfying note. As an adaptation of the animated film, it serves... but I've always held that comic book adaptations of animated films are among the most unnecessary ones out there, since what you usually get is just a bunch of still images of the movie, and that's definitely the case here. At least the art is better: rotoscoping's usually easy to beat.
Bakshi never got to do his sequel and finish the story. This comic book had the opportunity to do just that - give us the rest of the Two Towers, as well as Return of the King, as Bakshi might have adaptated them (ignoring Rankin-Bass) - and would certainly have had some historical merit if it had gone ahead with it. Yet even that potential it squanders. Such a shame. As it stands, you can safely skip this one.
