The strawberry danio from Thailand is so named because of its beautiful red color. Especially the adult males are great colored and have besides a reddish body color with a conspicuous black shoulder spot bright orange-red markings in the fins, which otherwise still have a black front edge. The females are much paler in color than the males, which makes distinguishing the sexes quite easy. The species Boraras naevus is very peaceful and grows only 1,5-2,5 cm long. The species was scientifically described only in 2011. Before that the Strawberry Darling was known as Boraras micros "Red" in the trade.
As a lively, swimming schooling fish, Strawberry Darling should swim in a group of at least 10 conspecifics. In good conditions in the aquarium, these small danios can live a surprisingly long time, from 9-10 years is mentioned in the literature.
For breeding of the Strawberry danios you should set up an extra spawning tank, the breeding in the aquarium is considered very difficult, because the danios are arge spawn predators. The tiny fish larvae need dust food and infusoria in the beginning, later also artemia supliia are suitable for breeding.
Strawberry danios like their water soft and slightly acidic to neutral (pH approx. 6-7) and a water temperature of approx. 22-26 °C. A heater is therefore not absolutely necessary. If now the water current is still light and the light is dimmed a little with floating plants, the conditions for the pretty little ornamental fish are perfect.
The strawberry danio has only a tiny mouth, into which shrimp babies do not fit at all, so it can besocialized with dwarf shrimps without hesitation. Its preferences in water values make it a good aquarium company for bee shr imp or other soft water shrimp.
Strawberry danios are omnivores, but their very small mouth requires some special treatment: flake food should be finely grated, frozen food or live food should also be small accordingly. Ideal: Collect the floating egg boats of mosquito larvae from the rain barrel and let them float on the aquarium. In this way, the fish pick up the tiny mosquito larvae immediately after hatching - it doesn't get any better or fresher than this.
Our food recommendation: The professional NatureHolic Nanofeed is a staple food for all small aquarium fish. This mini fish food and rearing food is a fine soft granulate which, thanks to its softness, resembles the consistency of tiny crustaceans and insect larvae and protects the delicate mouth of nano fish and fry from micro injuries.
Our plant recommendation: For planting, use NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
