The Moluccan fan hand shr imp is probably one of the most whimsical shrimp. Not only does it have an unusually wide wedge shape, it also impresses with the graceful fans that gave this shrimp its name. With its imposing size of up to 10 cm, it absolutely stands out in the aquarium. Their coloration is relatively variable. The Moluccan fan shrimp is usually of a lighter ground color and has fine reddish brown or light to dark brown longitudinal stripes and often a lighter dorsal stripe. The front legs of the older males are decidedly stout and bear a distinct claw at the tip. Females have more slender legs.
In nature, the Moluccan fan shrimp lives in river sections with very strong currents. There it clings with its strong legs to stones or driftwood and filters with its first two pairs of legs, which have been transformed into fans, floating food from the water. Also in the aquarium the Moluccan fan shrimp needs a very strong current and fine flake and small frozen food, ground nettle or spinach powder or ideally a special fan shrimp dust food to feel really well. The animals prefer to sit on roots or stones in the current from which they filter their food. In many aquariums the filter current is too clean or not strong enough, so in these cases we advise an additional flow pump.
Moluccan fan hand shrimp are peaceful animals that feel comfortable in a group of three or four or more. They can be socialized with practically all other freshwater shrimps, with not too large peaceful fish, which should not be too curious, and also with snails or mussels. Crabs and crayfish will attack the relatively defenseless fan hand shrimp and severely injure them or even eat them. We therefore advise against socialization with these invertebrates.
The breeding of the Moluccan fan shrimp is quite difficult. The female carries about 2,000 very small eggs under her abdomen for 40 days. From them hatch tiny floating larvae that need brackish water for their development. After about 70 days, the larvae molt into the juvenile shrimp, which must then be transferred back to freshwater. The breeding process is similar to that of the Amana shrimp.
Our food recommendation: The biologically valuable complete feed NatureHolic Fan Feed Fan Shrimp Food is a finely ground dust food especially for fan shrimp. It contains krill, spirulina, moringa and Dunaliella salina and a special blend of immediately bioavailable organic mineral compounds.
Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
