The pretty tetra "white fin " is a subspecies of the well-known tetra and fascinates especially by its white fin tips, which also gave him his additional name Like his cousins, he is a very peaceful fellow, which can be prima in the South American tank at home. Originally the Hyphessobrycon bentosi, as it is scientifically called, comes from Guyana in South America and lives there in soft to medium hard waters.
Growing up to 5.5 cm in size, the ornamental tetra has a transparent body and translucent fins. The tip of the dorsal fin is fringed with white, and the caudal fin has red spots. Males are more intensely colored and have a longer extended dorsal fin, and females grow slightly larger. The Jewel Tetra "white fin" have the typical tetra fat and long extended anal fin, as well as a terminal mouth.
Breeding in the aquarium is possible, but the parents are strong spawn predators, so the young fish should rather be raised in a breeding tank. For egg laying a spawning grid is suitable, but also fine moss cushions, such as Java moss. With fine frost or Live food can be used to get the adults in the right mood. The juveniles initially feed on their yolk sac and can then be raised with slipper l izards or Artemia nauplii.
Our Schmucksalmler are German offspring.
The very social tetras should preferably be kept in a group with 8-10 animals. If the shoal is larger than 10 animals, the aquarium should also be larger. The peaceful fish can also be easily mixed with other fish Tetras and Catfish or other peaceful medium to small fishes. With larger shrimps or also dwarf crayfish they can be combined likewise well, crayfish or also Cherax are however rather unsuitable, since these could seize at the Schmucksalmlern.
The aquarium for the Schmucksalmler "white fin" should contain at least 54 liters and should be well planted, so that the animals can withdraw from time to time. A sufficiently large swimming space, preferably in the middle water layer, should be considered. The water should be soft to medium hard and have a pH value of 6-7.5. They feel most comfortable at a temperature of 23 and 26 °C.
As omnivores, the tetra can be fed with high-quality flake food or small granulate food for omnivorous ornamental fish. Small live foods such as artemia euplii, water fleas, cyclops but also grindal, microworms but also fine frozen foods bring species-appropriate variety.
Our food recommendation: This NatureHolic Main Feed is a professional staple food for all aquarium fish. We supply Hauptfeed in the form of soft granules, which, thanks to its grain size of half a millimeter, can be easily ingested by small to medium-sized fish. The soft consistency resembles the texture of insect larvae in nature and protects the fish mouth from micro-injuries.
Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free from algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
