from over 3,000 reviews "The golden form of the Aland, Nerfling or Orfe(Leuciscus idus) is called Goldorfe. Their intense golden-yellow to orange-gold color is beautiful and stands out very well in the pond. The ventral side is usually a little lighter to silvery. The orfe belongs to the carp family and is a real schooling fish. Nerflings are not only ideal pond fish, but the fish are also common in natural waters in our country. Orfe like to stay close to the surface in rivers and lakes, occasionally they can be seen under low-hanging trees and bushes on the shore.
Golden orfe are true schooling fish and need the company of at least six or seven conspecifics. The pond must be correspondingly large, 1000 liters per golden orfe is calculated as the lower limit. The pond can be well planted, which increases the oxygen supply for the fish. The golden orfe is a swimming pond fish and needs accordingly much oxygen. Therefore, in summer it needs an oxydator for garden ponds, a water feature or an air pump for better air supply in the pond water.
To spawn, orfes migrate in nature in shoals to calm river areas with little current. About 115,000 eggs are laid there from March to June. Only in very large garden ponds do golden orfe reproduce accordingly, in smaller ponds reproduction is not to be expected. The beautiful pond fish are fully grown and sexually mature at about six years of age.
On average, golden orfe grow to a total length of 30 to 60 centimeters, they weigh up to about 4 kg. As juveniles, orioles feed primarily on small zooplankton, and can be found in areas close to shore. Adult Goldorfen like to eat insect larvae, smaller mollusks such as snails and crustaceans, as well as the fry and spawn of other fish.
Golden orfe are really well suited pond fish, perfectly and selectively eating mosquitoes and mosquito larvae that breed in the pond. They also effectively counteract excessive reproduction of other pond fish, for example goldfish, and regulate their population. Goldfish are curious fish and can be easily accustomed to hand feeding.
Goldfish need oxygen-rich, clean water, so a pond filter is a wise purchase. Goldorfen do not dig in the pond mud for food, but eat insect larvae, pond snails and other zooplankton from the plants and from the open water. They can be fed a good supplement of pond fish food for carnivorous fish if the food supply in the pond is insufficient.
Golden orfe retreat to deeper areas of the pond to overwinter. The pond must be at least 1-1.30 meters deep to prevent the water from freezing through to the bottom of the pond. An ice freezer or pond thermostat prevents the pond surface from freezing over completely. Thus, these devices ensure reliable gas exchange and oxygen supply to the hibernating golden orf in the pond.
Here you can choose gold orfes in 5 different sizes: 7-10 cm, 10-12, 13-16, 20-25 and 25-30 cm
