The Green Tiger is a variant of Poecilia wingei, the Endler Guppy from South America. Endler are a separate species, they were first described in 2005. The Green Tiger can interbreed with the closely related Guppy (Poecilia reticulata), and the hybrids are then fertile again. However, there are clear differences from the Guppy in size and behavior toward offspring.
The coloration of the Green Tiger Endler male is not quite as colorful as that of the wild form of the ornamental fish, which grows only to 2 cm long, but no less spectacular. On a yellow to green ground we see a fine stripe pattern and dot pattern. A large black Endler typical spot is emblazoned on the belly. Endler females grow larger than males at about 3.5-4 cm total length. They are usually solid gray with a black pregnancy spot on the end of the abdomen. The courtship behavior of Endler males is worth seeing and really interesting.
As live-bearing toothcarps, Endlers have young that they give birth to alive. The adults do not prey on their offspring as much as normal aquarium guppies. Litters occur at 4-6 week intervals. They are smaller (only 10-25 baby fish), but Endlers reproduce very effectively because many more animals per litter come through. The young fish can stay in the parent tank. If you don't know where to put the offspring, you should separate the sexes and start an all-male group. By the way, the females can still give birth to offspring for months because they can store the sperm of the males.
Endler Guppies tend to be more active in the upper water layers and like to pick up approach food or also any existing scum from the water surface with their overhead mouths. They also eat algae and decaying plant parts. In the aquarium, a special guppy food has proven to be good, but they also love scalded or soft vegetables or dried, soaked vegetable chips, as well as frozen food and live food.
Endler Guppies live in nature as in the aquarium in rather loose groups, the swarming behavior is not particularly strong. Green Tiger Endlers need medium to hard water and even tolerate slightly salty brackish water. An aquarium temperature of 22-28 °C is perfect for Poecilia wingei, a heater is therefore not absolutely necessary for successful keeping.
The socialization of Green Tiger Endler Guppies with robust, reproductive shrimp works quite well, even if small shrimp babies are eaten from time to time. Above all, an all-male group is not as "dangerous" to shrimp as a mixed group of males and females because the males, with their smaller body size and smaller mouths, can handle fewer large shrimp. If there is enough moss and other hiding places in the aquarium, enough shrimp of a robust species like the colorful Neocaridina davidi (Red Fire and Co.) or Sulawesi inland shrimp will get through. These species also fit the Green Tiger Endler Guppy very well in terms of water values. Since Endler sleep on the bottom, they can become prey for crayfish.
Our food recommendation: The fragrant NatureHolic Guppyfeed was tailor-made for the requirements of guppies and other viviparous fish in the aquarium. In addition to high-quality animal ingredients, it also contains vegetable components that benefit guppies & co. The soft granules protect the sensitive mouth of the viviparous from injuries caused by hard food grains and provide the fish with a natural feeding experience.
Our plant recommendation: For planting, use NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
