Will the Caribbean Island of Anguilla Survive a Wave of New Development

This article is more than 7 years old.

Four Seasons Resort and Private Residences Anguilla (formerly the Vicerory Hotel)

Anguilla is everything you would ever want from a Caribbean island – blinding white sand beaches, turquoise waters, tranquil bays, gentle breezes, palm trees, billionaire villas and movie stars abundant. Yet the island had been experiencing a downturn in visitors due to the lack of direct flights, reduced customer service and shortage of first class staffing.

Things are about to change for this sleepy island that I have come to love. I have visited Anguilla many times throughout the years and have never wanted to leave. I am excited about the new resort developments and openings on the horizon to reboot this island paradise in the coming year.

My last visit was to the luxurious Cap Juluca, which recently sold to Belmond, and is really the crown jewel on the island. Belmond will also operate the hotel.

After planning and obtaining all necessary permits in 2017, Belmond expects to carry out a complete renovation and develop 25 new beachfront villas or suites, to include a total of 121 rooms by the end of 2018.

Among the many changes to the island are;

FOUR SEASONS RESORTS AND PRIVATE RESIDENCES

Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, announced that they will assume management of the Viceroy Anguilla resort. Following the Resort’s annual closure from August to October, the property will reopen as Four Seasons Resort and Private Residences Anguilla.

The 35 square-mile island of Anguilla is one of the only islands in the British West Indies to maintain an embargo on cruise ships, casinos and high rise hotels, preserving the natural beauty, culture and tranquility of the island. Framed by endless white sand beaches, serene bays and rugged coral coastline, the Four Seasons Resort and Private Residences Anguilla is located along the island’s northwestern shore, offering 3,200 feet of pristine beachfront and unobstructed views of the Caribbean Sea’s breaking surf.

The Four Seasons will feature 166 accommodations including dedicated resort guest rooms, whole-ownership beachfront private residences, 5,000 square-foot villas, and vacation rental units and an 8,100 square-foot spa.

CORITO AND SAVANNAH BAY RESORTS

Corito Bay and Savannah Bay will open a six-star super luxury beachfront resort that will feature residential living, a world-class spa, private yacht and polo club.

Nestled on two prime beachfront locations on the east side of the island, Savannah Bay will feature 100 super luxury resort style resident homes along with a 120-unit resident condo hotel. It will also include floating residences, called New Living on the Water that are super luxury homes located on the inland sea water pond.

As an added bonus, Sava Bay will also have its own 80-meter super luxury yacht that residential owners have exclusive rights to access and book on an annual basis - one week in the Caribbean and one week in the Mediterranean.

Corito Bay will feature 100 meticulously designed, two and three bedroom villas developed on 40 acres of luxury beachfront property. Situated on each one-acre parcel of land will have four villas and one concierge service house. At Coritio Bay, guest arriving by boat or yacht will have the luxury of clearing immigration through the use of their onsite immigration centre. Professional entertainment owners and guests will also be able to access an adjoining recording studio, screening rooms and new technology facilities.

ZEMI BEACH HOUSE

Located in Anguilla on one of the world’s best beaches, Shoal Bay East, the boutique property recently opened with 70 rooms. By the end of this year the beachfront resort will expand to 129 rooms composed of 54 dedicated hotel rooms and 50 luxury residences that can be placed into a rental program managed by the resort. Zemi Beach House is the first resort to open on Anguilla’s East End, known for its powdery beaches, private villas and beach bars.

Accommodations consist of Deluxe rooms with ocean views starting at $699 per night; Superior Corner King rooms; Two-bedroom and three-bedroom oceanfront suites with a private terrace and plunge pool; Three-bedroom penthouses with terraces, a living room, kitchen and rooftop plunge pool. All guestrooms boast balconies or terraces with sea- or oceanfront views.

Nestled inside an authentic Thai House that was transported from Thailand to Anguilla in the 1980s, the Zemi Thai House Spa will be the resort’s crowned jewel. Carefully restored to offer a ground-breaking wellness experience and spanning 15,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space, the spa will house the island’s first co-ed ‘House of Wellbeing’ with a heated gobek tasi, sun deck for mud and salt body treatments, outdoor showers and vitality pool.
