Britney Spears is riding high off the success of her newly-released memoir, The Woman In Me. The title easily topped the New York Times’ bestseller list, selling more than one million copies in its first week. That’s a huge sum, and it’s only getting started, so it’s clear that interest in her story is still incredibly high, even after decades in the spotlight.
Publishers aren’t the only ones hoping to cash in on Spears’ story. Hollywood has noticed how well her book is selling, and plenty of high-profile people in the business want to be involved in bringing it to life in other ways.
According to The Ankler, superstars and powerful producers like Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt, Shonda Rhimes and Reese Witherspoon are trying to acquire the rights to Spears’ life story. They all own production companies that could turn the tell-all bestseller into both a film or TV show—or perhaps both.
The media outlet reports that the rights could sell for around $4 million. That’s a hefty sum for a book option, even one as successful as The Woman In Me.
Offers for a documentary that involves Spears are even more impressive. The same article cites sources with knowledge of this bidding war that such a project, should the singer actually take part, could fetch $40 million. That would surely make it one of the most expensive music documentaries of all time, if not reset that record.
While these numbers are exciting and there is clearly a feeding frenzy around Spears and The Woman In Me, it’s possible that none of this will ever come to fruition. Or, that the Grammy winner and her team might not make any decisions for a while. The Ankler article claims that Spears is reportedly “overwhelmed by the response” to the book and they may all wait until everything settles a bit and the superstar has had a chance to “catch her breath” before moving forward with anything.
