Latitude C800, Maxing it out

I have an old C800 that I'm wanting to upgrade to Vista.  Need to and want to max everything ou.  Already at the P3 1gig speed.  Have a 100gig hard drive comming as well as DVD burner and new batteries.

I need to focus on memory and the wireless part of it that I'm somewhat unsure of.  If I get the miniPCI wireless card, would that mean I'll loss the current 10/100 & 56k thats in there right now?  Its not a big deal considering I already am not using it.  I'm using a PCMIA card at the moment as its in a better spot for the cable to be route.

Which ones are compatitble?  Any miniPCI card?  Well an Intel miniPCI card work?

Secondly, I have a pair of 128mb memory chip on my laptop.  They are the Micron chips that have 8 chips on each card.  Does it matter if I get a 16 chip or not?  I'm just affriad they will not fit in my loptop due to the added height of the chips.

Sorry about the size of the image.  It was the only one I had of it at the time of posting.

You have 3 choices to max out the C800 memory at 512mb. You can use 2-256MB PC100 16chip(Low Density) Modules, OR 2-256mb PC133 8chip Modules, OR 1-512mb PC133 Module. The latter one is not in Dells documentation, but it works. Nothing will work in the empty slot however, as the board limit of 512mb is still in effect

I am using a Dell True Mobile 1350 card in my C800. The setup file will not install it, but all you need is to direct the driver install to the .inf file and it will work fine. I have an Intell 2200 BG that I cannot get to work on a consistant basis.

I don't understand the chip ordeal?  My current ones are 8 chip soI would assume that the 8 chip ram would work considering the picture displayed on Dell's website is also an 8 chip ram.  I wish there was an easier way.

I have eard of possible pc-133 chips working but I do not know if it will certainly work.  They are a heck of a lot cheaper though.

87wing,

I think I just ordered the intell 2200.  I'll see what happens when I get it and see if I can get it to work.  I can always sell it on ebay if I have to.  Thanks for the tip though.

8 chips in 128mb modules, 16 chips in 256mb are low density PC100. Notice that double the RAM on a single Low Density Module requires double the chips. I know that one 512mb PC133 Module will work from personal experience. I have a C800 board with a totally bad RAM slot and tried the 512MB PC133 out of need, and to my surprise, it worked fine and still is.

I got the Intell 2200 wireless card.  It works without any problems.  Only problem I have is setting it up so I can use it in a secured wireless network.  If I leave the network open, it can automatically detech and browse the web without any problems.

Once I enable the secureity on it to make the wireless network private, I get restricted use on the internet.  I'm not very network savy so I'll see what I can dig up in the mean time.

Aside from that the hard drive should be in monday or tuesday and a set of fresh new batteries too!

Thanks for the input so far fella's!

Well I ended up trying a 256mb 16 chip Dell piece and it worked.  However, it had to be in slot b instead of slot a in order for the old 128mb piece to register with it.  Otherwise, it would only register 256mb total instead of the 384mb that was in the system.

I'll have to search ebay for a similar chip which they do have.  I just don't like the idea of bidding ont things that may end up costing more than what I want to pay for them.

Too bad I didn't see the Kingston 40% off deal for Dell memory or else I would have bought it through Kingston for $37/each and they are PC133 chips.  Its just easier to trust brand name companies that say their memory will work compared to ebay auctions that assume they will work along with generic brand memory.  Plus it'll be easier to return if it didn't work.
