Jozef Mehoffer

Jozef Mehoffer (1869 - 1946) was active/lived in Poland.  Jozef Mehoffer is known for Painting, portrait, genre, mod design of stained glass, book covers, furniture.

A painter and decorative artist and prominent in the Young Poland movement in the early 20th century, Jazef Mehoffer is represented in the Krakow Museum.  He studied in Krakow at the Academy of Fine Arts under Wladyslaw Luszczkiewicz, and later at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna as well as in Paris at the Académie Colarossi among others.

In Paris, Mehoffer began painting portraits, often people of historical significance.  Later he expanded his repertoire to include graphic art, stained glass, textiles, chalk drawings, etchings, book illustrations, theatre set designs and stylized furniture designs.

He did numerous book covers, ornaments and posters and also did frescoes reflective of medieval art.  Associates and collaborators included Stanislaw Wyspianski and Jan Matejko.

Jozef Mehoffer was born in 1869 in Ropczyce. He became a painter, graphic artist, decorator, stage designer, and educator. Next to Stanislaw Wyspianski, Mehoffer was the greatest Polish creator of stained glass and polychrome. Mehoffer was a student of Jan Matejko and Parisian universities, Ecolé des Beaux-Arts and Académie Colarossi. He began his long creative career by collaborating with Matejko on the polychrome of St. Mary's Church. The year 1895 brought Jozef Mehoffer the first prize at the international competition for stained glass windows for the collegiate church in Freiburg, Switzerland, which lasted until 1934. After the competition, he received other orders, including from the Wawel cathedral, from Wloclawek, and Przemysl. Jozef Mehoffer was the most outstanding and consistent representative of Art Nouveau in the Krakow community. He created decorative portraits of many personalities, images of his wife and himself, as well as genre compositions, which in the years 1895-1917 acquired the meaning of symbolic compositions.

He was a painter, graphic artist, decorator, set designer and teacher. He studied painting in the years 1887-94 at the Krakow School of Fine Arts with Wladyslaw Luszczkiewicz and Jan Matejko, while simultaneously studying law at the Jagiellonian University. He continued his education at Parisian universities: Académie Julian, Académie Colarossi (with P. - J. Blanc, G. Courtois) and École des Beaux-Arts (with Léon Bonnat). After his studies, in the years 1894-96 he lived alternately in the country, Paris and Switzerland. For the design of stained-glass windows for the collegiate church in Freiburg, he received the first prize at an international competition (the stained-glass windows lasted until 1934). In 1896 he settled in Kraków, and from 1900 he was a lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts. He was a member and co-founder of the Society of Polish Artists (1897). He painted decorative portraits, symbolic compositions, landscapes and still lifes.
