Balansae plants are a popular choice for beginner and experienced aquarium hobbyists. This crypt in particular creates a tranquil scene in the background of an aquascape, as their dark or bright green reed-like leaves sway gently in the current, offering cozy hiding spots for fish to play in.
Balansae plants thrive in an environment that is rich with nitrate, phosphate, iron, CO2, and calcium. Calcium supplement is highly recommended, as the plant’s leaves will grow twisted and deformed without it.
Requires moderate to high lighting. To achieve the attractive puckering or ruffled effect of the balansae plant’s leaves, the lighting of at least 2-3 watts/gallon is needed. High lighting can also cause the leaves to take on a bronze tint. Mature plants with high light can potentially produce flowers when grown emersed.
This plant is much easier to grow submersed, however. All crypt plants hate changes in water parameters and will undergo “crypt melt” if conditions vary too much.

Balansae plants are a popular choice for beginner and experienced aquarium hobbyists. The plant’s short stems produce long, thin leaves that make a great contrast to hardscape materials. This species hails from Southern Thailand where it inhabits fast-flowing rivers and streams with high limestone content. Balansae plants thrive in an environment that is rich with nitrate, phosphate, iron, CO2, and calcium. Calcium supplement is highly recommended, as the plant’s leaves will grow twisted and deformed without it. Balansae plants need moderate to high lighting. To achieve the attractive puckering or ruffled effect of the balansae plant’s leaves, the lighting of at least 2-3 watts/gallon is needed. High lighting can also cause the leaves to take on a bronze tint. Mature plants with high light can potentially produce flowers when grown emersed. This plant is much easier to grow submersed, however. All crypt plants hate changes in water parameters and will undergo “crypt melt” if conditions vary too much. The leaves of the plant begin to rot and essentially melt away. If this process begins, you can cut away any rot and attempt to stabilize the water. It is normal for crypts to melt when introduced to a new tank and should produce new growth once they have acclimated.

I purchased 8 pots, 3 different kinds of crypts. I expected them to be a melty mess like every other crypt I've purchased or moved from one tank to another. Imagine my shock when they adjusted to my tank almost immediately and only maybe a half dozen leaves in total showed any slight sign of melt. The wendtii brown was a little smaller than I was expecting but it's taken root very fast and growing well! Absolutely top tier quality plants and I'm a loyal customer for life. Prices are excellent and the pots are absolutely LOADED with individual well established plants.

Update!!! My little cryptocoryne is thriving with lots of new growth and only two leaves melted. I planted it in a small flowerpot and added a quarter of a root tab to a sand gravel substrate mix, with low light. I'm very happy with my purchase and will buy more!

Okay, good part first. The plant itself is awesome. Very generous amount and there were actually four plants in the rock wool. I am absolutely praying they make it.

Packaging was meh at best. Vender did the right thing by putting in a heat pack. It is Feb5 in the cold northeast. The problem is that they clearly don't understand heat packs. It was placed right next to the plant in a thing UPS box with no other insulation. The pack made a great ice cube when the box was opened.

The Horrid part is mostly my fault. I assumed the the package would be labeled live plants and the nice people at FedEx or Amazon would at least knock on the door. It's freakin winter ! No such luck. The box wasn't labeled and it sat in the snow for who knows how long t this morning. I own it. I shouldn't have assumed nice people or a label. I'm praying that I can nurse the plants back to health.

Summation: Great Vendor. Don't order in the winter!
