The boy was in the hallway drinking a glass of tea
From the other end of the hallway a rhythm was generating
Another boy was sliding up the hallway
He merged perfectly with the hallway,
He merged perfectly, the mirror in the hallway
The instrumentation is marked by nice drum rolls and rhythmic guitars that sound mesmerising behind Smith's hypnotic voice.

It has often received so much adulation and praise from the music press (of its day) and music industry at large; as being the best debut solo album of all time.and for once (on the whole) I tend to agree with them.
Patti Smith - with her highly original voice and style, made an album of (two) cover versions ie. Gloria (Them ft Van Morrison),and the three part suite of; Land: Horses,Land of a thousand dances (much covered),La mer (de).
Despite the album having an extremely art rock, nouvelle air of Chicness about it - it's also very varied in musical styles.
T2: Rendo beach - is very Jamaican reggae and tropical in texture.Free money - heads back to the USA and with its piano intro, has leanings of Bruce Springsteen (future asssociate) about it.
Original Album closer: Elegie - is a reflective end to a quite different album by Patti Smith.produced by John Cale of The Velvet underground fame - the two certainly have a lot in common with each other - musically!
Final track on disc one is; a very fiesty, full of attitude and angry version of The Who's rebellious anthem - My generation.this sounds live with audience applause at the end - but we're not done yet - continue to listen to disc 2 of this 2005 'Legacy edition' re-issue of Horses.
This leads me neatly to err...disc 2 of said package.
It's a live rendition - recorded at the Royal festival hall,London in 2005 (30 years after original album release) - of the whole Horses album; and as in common with most live renditions,is faithful to the original album but better when performed without the constraints of a closed-in studio environment (sounds clichéd but true).
Ending with that same? Rendition of My generation - this is a longer and 'sweary and edgy' version of said song.PS is at her most angriest, rebellious and gives one hell of a rant against 'the system' and authority at large.
This 2005 thirtieth anniversary 'legacy edition' of Horses by Patti Smith - is,on the whole - an excellent package including; slipcase, fold out package, booklet crammed full of info - sleeve notes, full lyrics, credits,b & w photos of main starlet,Patti Smith (of course),band personel for both studio and live versions including; Lenny Kaye,Tom Verlaine and Flea of Red hot chilli peppers (live version).
I am probably the type of person who doesn't fully appreciate what art rock etc chic and credibility is all about.and this is reflected in Patti Smith's sleeve notes for this reissue project - I find them beyond pretentious, even incoherent.continuing with notes by Paul Williams - not much better, and by the time I got round to the disc 2 ramblings by Sandy Pearlman- i'd given up long since.
Iv'e never 'got' most forms of art rock (with the exception of 10cc,perhaps) - and that's why at the end of this review - I'm sat here with my head in my hands at the (written) pretentiousness of it all!
Having said that; I give full credit to Patti Smith (and gang) for creating a very classy sounding debut album - made even better with this remastered update - before the beginning of anything punk/new wave had even been unleashed onto an unsuspecting public at large - highly recommended all the same.
