The Cherry Red Story

It all started in the most unlikely of places, Great Malvern in Worcestershire. It was 1971, music and flares were in; Arsenal won the double, and I was sharing a house in South London, with amongst others, Richard Jones. Richard came from Malvern, and after much prompting, persuaded me to join forces with him and his old school friend Will Atkinson to promote rock concerts at the large, and somewhat under-utilised, Malvern Winter Gardens.

Somewhat nervously we awaited the day of our first promotion, the 3rd July 1971. Hawkwind + Skin Alley + Sidewinder disco, all for only 12 old shillings. What a bargain! We celebrated as over 600 people turned up, and we were able to share a small profit between the three of us. And so it went on, in fact for the next ten years, every three weeks or so I would drive to Malvern and help to promote a concert with my partners Will and Richard.

We decided to call our company Cherry Red Promotions. Where did the name Cherry Red come from? We pondered for weeks over what to call our new venture, and eventually it was Will who came up with the name – it was the title of a track from the Groundhogs ‘Split’ album – we liked the Groundhogs, we liked the name, so that was that. Tony Macphee, it’s all down to you!

Editorial Reviews

Remastered and expanded edition of the classic 4th album and major label debut.

Formed in 1984, Dinosaur Jr carved a singular path through the latter half of the 1980s, issuing three highly influential albums in the process before finding a home with Sire Records, who issued ''Green Mind'' in 1991 as the alternative American rock scene the band had long been part of exploded globally. Produced by a stripped down line-up of the group (in fact, J Mascis himself plays almost everything), the album and Sire's international reach took Dinosaur Jr's reputation to a new level, aided by the singles ''The Wagon'' and ''Whatever's Cool With Me'', a non-album EP of new material and live recordings, all of which are included here alongside a previously unreleased live recording capturing the group at the Hollywood Palladium in June 1991. Critically lauded on release, ''Green Mind'' remains one of the band's strongest collections, and a firm fan favorite.

I bought this because the CD does not play right on my PC and it translates to itunes. I bought the digital remastered version and now my copy of Green Mind is free of ay impediments.

If you haven't heard the album, give it a whirl. It's great. J delves more into acoustic territory for his fourth release. Thank God he didn't quite after Bug. To this day when Dinosaur plays 'The Wagon' at their shows every venue goes nuts. It's a real highlight at all their shows. Its just as powerful on the album. There's not a bad track on the album. It comes with "Turnip Farm" so bonus!

I'm a big fan of 90s alt rock and grunge rock etc... How did I never hear of Dinosaur Jr.!? A friend turned me on to them and since then I got 2 more of their albums but I still like this one the best. Plus if you don't like the music you can always make up a story about the badass girl on the cover. My interpretation is she's picking up trash on the beach as part of her reform punishment... or she's just French.

One of the greatest albums of the 90’s (or really, any other decade). Excellent remastering and bonus cuts/disc.

Dinosaur Jr. is a band totally in their own zone. Their music is just different in comparison to the other bands in the 90's era. And with the track Turnip Farm (as heard in the movie Reality Bites), you truly can't go wrong with this band, especially for those looking to cross over the mainstream.

it's some of my favorite collection of tunes by J Macis, and favorite albums from the '90s. 'nuff said about that.
the carrier of this product, Mr C, came through exactly as promised.
the item arrived as described, and in great shape with no shipping damage.

thanks again, Mr C!!

If there's one thing I hope to achieve through my (generally mediocre) music reviews, it's to bring people's attention to some recordings that they might not otherwise hear. And "Green Mind" is one such unfairly neglected album. Over the past three years or so rock radio has been swarmed by bands trying to mix early-90's alternative rock with pop sensibilities, but unfortunately most of these acts tend to come off as almost appallingly indistinguished (think Nickelback). J. Mascis (who basically was Dinosaur Jr.) was not only doing it about ten years before any of these bands, but doing it a lot better. In a time dominated, whether for better or for worse, by self-conscious angst, Dinosour Jr. instead got by on an abundance of lazy charm.

First of all, is there any doubt that J. has one of the most memorable rock voices ever? His aching, warbling croak simultaneously brings to mind Paul Westerberg, Eddie Vedder, and even a little Kurt Cobain, but J. never sacrifices his individuality. He also accompanies himself brilliantly on the guitar, getting quite a bit of mileage out of just a few chords. Throughout the album, J. expertly mixes head-banging riffs, addictive pop hooks, and the occasional dose of gentle acoustics (see "Flying Cloud" for an example of the latter). Where J. really lets loose, though, is with his searing solos, which will bounce around in your head for days after you hear them. Throw in some truly monstrous drumbeats, and you've got something that goes well beyond your typical indie-rock album.
"Green Mind" bursts right out of the gate with the up-tempo pop-rock of "Wagon," which is easily one of the catchiest songs ever to open an album. "Wagon" is followed up brilliantly by the massive hooks of "Puke + Cry," the hard-driving rhythms of "Blowing It," and the dense, metallic "I Live For That Look." Later on, J. scores again with the moody alt-rock of "Water" and the slow-paced curveball "Thumb," which even brings a mellotron into the mix for some added atmosphere. The album closes with yet another brilliant piece of noise in the form of the title track, propelled by a classic riff and some maniacal drumming.
For sheer enjoyment, it's pretty tough to top this album. It's too bad Dinosaur Jr. never really managed to break out into the big time, but that doesn't mean they're not worth checking out. For fans of bands like the Pixies, the Replacements, and Husker Du, "Green Mind" is absolutlely essential.
