Endemic fish species contribute 4% of the total freshwater ornamental fish exports in Sri Lanka. Most of them are collected from their natural habitats, wild population are depleting. Pethia reval is a newly described highly threatened, fish species endemic to Sri Lanka. This study was carried out to determine the best feed type out of Moina (T 1), Ox – heart (T 2) and Pellet feed (T 3), to optimize the growth and reproductive performances of P. reval. Brooders P. reval were (total body length ranged from 20 to 25 mm) collected from Aththanagalu Oya, and stocked in cement tanks (5'x 3'x 3') at NARA. Feed consumption, total body length and body weight of all brooders were recorded monthly. Acceptability of feeds was determined by visual observations. Water quality parameters were measured biweekly. After four months, brooders fish were stocked in glass tanks (2'x 1'x 1') to evaluate their breeding performances. The number of laid and fertilized eggs and survivals were recorded at 1 st spawning. Specific growth rates (SGR), feed conversion efficiency (FCE), fertilization rate of eggs and survival rate of fry were then calculated. Complete Randomized Design (CRD) was used and data were analyzed by SAS computer software subsequently means were compared using Duncan's New Multiple Range test. Specific growth rate was not significantly different (P > 0.05) among the treatments whereas FCE was significantly different (P < 0.05) in T 1. The fertilization rate was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in fish, those fed with T 1 and T3 than that of T 2. Significantly higher (P < 0.05) survival rate was observed in T 3 than T 1 and T 2. Visual observations proved that T 2 was the most preferable feed compare to the other tested feed types. The present study showed that under aquarium condition the better growth and reproductive performances of P. reval can be obtained with Moina .

Length-weight relationship and condition factor of Pethia ticto (Hamilton, 1822) from Gomti river in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India2018 •
This study describes the length-weight relation (LWR) of small indigenous fish Pethia ticto from Gomti River, Aamghat, Haliyapur, Sultanpur district 260 29N and 810 44E, 751m (msl) Uttar Pradesh, India. A total of 306 specimens were caught by random sampling method using traditional fishing gear as gillnet, cast net and dragnet of various mesh sizes from June 2016 to May 2017, once in a month. Total Length (mm) was measured from anteriormost part of the snout to the posterior-most part of the caudal fin and body weight (g) were taken by digital electronic balance. The analysis of data shows that the allometric coefficient is close to isometric value (3.0). Allometric growth indicates a more rotund population of fish when the values of growth coefficient are higher than 3.0 (b>3). If the value of growth coefficient is less than 3.0, the population of fish is known to be less rotund. Isometric growth indicates that the shape of fish does not change as it grows (b=3). The coefficien...

The life cycle of fish undergoes a lot of changes, starting from eggs to adult and the nutritional requirements for the fish vary with some factors such as the relationship between the diet and life stage. The experiment was conducted to have a comparative study between the effect of live feed and artificial feed on the growth and survivality of the juveniles of shinning barb consisting of three treatments i.e.T1 (plankton), T2 (artificial feed + plankton) and T3 (artificial feed) at the premises of ornamental unit of ICAR-CIFA, Bhubaneswar. The physico-chemical parameters of water such as temperature (°C), pH, dissolved oxygen (mg L), free carbon dioxide (mg L-1), alkalinity (mg L-1) and Hardness (mg L-1) were estimated weekly. Growth parameters like Mean body weight and length, weight gain and length gain (%), specific growth rate (SGR), survival (%) of shining barb, Pethia conchonius was recorded in mixed diet compared to fishes fed only with live food or artificial feed alone. I...

The coefficient of determination (R 2) was also found significant (=0.97). Fulton's condition factor further supports the results obtained ranged from 1.041 to 1.660 shows the degree of well being of a fish. This study is helpful in providing relevant information in the assessment of stock and estimation of the fish condition about its environment.

Francis Day described Pethia punctata from Cochin, on the Malabar (south western) coast of India. Although, the species is now recovered from its synonymy with P. ticto, an accurate diagnosis and description have been lacking. A redescription of P. punctata based on external morphology, osteology and genetics is provided, which revealed that P. muvattupuzhaen-sis, described from Muvattupuzha River, Ernakulam District, Kerala, India, is its junior synonym. Pethia punctata can be diagnosed from other known species in the genus by a combination of characters including lateral line complete, with 23–25 pored scales; 8 predorsal scales; 4/1/3 scales in transverse line; dorsal fin originating almost opposite to, or slightly before pelvic-fin origin; gill rakers 7 on first ceratobranchial; 4+26 total vertebrae; a small black humeral spot covering anterior half of the fourth scale of the row below the lateral-line row; two minute dark spots below the humeral spot; a prominent spot on the ca...

Morphometric relationships and meristic characteristics of ticto barb Pethia ticto (Hamilton, 1822) from Gomti River, Uttar Pradesh2018 •
The present study aims to illustrate the morphometric relationships and meristic characteristics of ticto barb, Pethia ticto from Gomti River, Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh. A total of 90 specimens ranging from 37-90 mm in total length and 0.82-10.37g body weight were used for morphometric and meristic studies. The sampling was done on monthly basis from June 2015 to May 2016 using different fishing gears as cast net, gill net and drag net having mesh size of about 1.0-2.0 cm. A total of 15 morphometric measurements and 8 meristic characters were considered for the present study. The standard length and fork length was found to be 77.98% and 89.27% of the total length, respectively. The head length, dorsal fin length, pectoral fin length, anal fin length and snout length were calculated as 24.17%, 20.96%, 16.64%, 13.76% and 7.04% of the total length respectively. The pre-orbital length and post orbital length was calculated as 7.07% and 11.78% of the total length, respectively. The fin formulae of P. ticto was found to be as dorsal, D III, 8; pectoral, P1 I, 12-14; pelvic, P2 III, 5; anal, A II-III, 5 and caudal, C X, 9-10. The present study will be helpful in identification of the species and linear measurements can be used to determine population dynamics and health status of P. ticto in its natural habitat.
Freshwater Fish List
Freshwater Fish List 26th Edition March2019 •
An alphabetic list with the scientific names of all known recent freshwater fish species is presented. Also listed are the English and Dutch vernacular names in use for freshwater fishes and the various English (common) names of the freshwater aquarium fishes. The aim of this publication is six-fold: • to list the currently valid and correctly written scientific name of every recent freshwater fish species; • to stimulate the use of correctly written scientific names; • to list Dutch and some frequently used English vernacular names of freshwater aquarium fishes and freshwater aquacultural fishes; • to list some scientific names wrongly used by aquarists; • to present some aquarium book citations; • to present an overview of the freshwater and brackish water fishes recorded during the last centuries in various aquarium books. Although many scientific names are likely to change with scientific progress, we nevertheless present the list of currently valid scientific names now. This current list can already be used for finding the currently valid names and the correct spelling of these names. Further it cites the use of the names in the aquarium literature and the list also provides an overview of the known species of freshwater fish. We also provide the largest freshwater aquarium fish bibliography ever published. We hope the freshwater fish name list will stimulate the use of correctly written scientific names and bring some stabilization in the use of common names.
