Bills’ Josh Allen, Stefon Diggs dominate Dolphins in 48-20 win

The Bills handed the Miami Dolphins their first loss of the season behind quarterback Josh Allen and wide receiver Stefon Diggs’ impressive outing in Buffalo’s 48-20 win Sunday. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Allen threw for four touchdowns and rushed for a fifth. He completed 21 of 25 passes for 320 yards and no interceptions.
  • Allen and Diggs connected for three touchdowns, including a 55-yard scoring pass late in the second quarter. Diggs finished with six catches for 120 yards.
  • The Bills activated safety Damar Hamlin, who played special teams and received his first snaps in a regular-season game since suffering cardiac arrest against the Cincinnati Bengals on Jan. 2.
  • The Dolphins fall to 3-1 with Sunday’s loss. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa went 25-of-35 while throwing for 282 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

How the Bills’ defense put Dolphins down

The Miami Dolphins took one right in the blowhole.

They rolled into Highmark Stadium with their pinball offense, darting all over the backfield with pre-snap motion and most recently putting the Denver Broncos on tilt with 70 points that easily could have been 80 had they tried the entire game.

Whoo, these Dolphins have been feeling it. Some got off the bus wearing T-shirts featuring the deep-thought emoji — chin in hand, arched eyebrow, a tad confused — over the Bills being favored to win Sunday.

Midway through the fourth quarter, game well in hand, the Bills defense kept jumping offsides because they couldn’t wait to ravage Tua Tagovailoa some more.

“That’s just guys foaming at the mouth, ears pinned back, can’t wait to rush,” Buffalo defensive end A.J. Epenesa said.

Confused? Yeah, Miami must’ve been while Buffalo reasserted itself with a 48-20 victory.

How Josh Allen, Bills offense outclassed star-studded Dolphins

Entering a Week 4 matchup against the Buffalo Bills, some pundits wondered whether the Miami Dolphins’ offense was the best in league history. By the time the Dolphins left Orchard Park with a 48-20 loss Sunday afternoon, it was fair to wonder whether they even had the best offense in the division.

Josh Allen was nearly flawless, completing 21 of 25 passes for 320 yards and four touchdowns. He added a rushing touchdown and had a perfect passer rating. Stefon Diggs was brilliant, racking up 120 yards and three touchdowns on six catches. Since 2020, that duo has been one of the most effective in football, helping the Bills to a 40-13 record. The Dolphins were the team of the week, but the Bills reminded everyone they aren’t fading out of the picture.

Josh Allen put himself right back in the MVP race with this performance. He exited the game with a perfect passer rating after completing 21 of his 25 passes for 320 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for a touchdown and was only sacked twice. Allen was on the field for 10 offensive possessions, and Buffalo scored on seven of them. This game is a reminder of what the Bills’ offense can look like when Allen takes over a game. He found Stefon Diggs six times for 120 yards and three touchdowns. The duo of Allen and Diggs is going to keep this offense among the league’s elite this season.

Since turning the ball over four times in a disastrous game against the Jets, Allen has just one turnover in four games and has 10 touchdowns.

Bills tie best long-term win trend against Dolphins

This is Buffalo’s 10th win against Miami in the last 11 matchups between these teams. That ties a franchise best long-term win trend against the Dolphins, as the 1987 to 1991 Bills clubs also won 10 out of 11 games against Miami.

Buffalo didn't blink. Miami posted those 70 plump points on the scoreboard last week, and got sawed in half Sunday by a defense that was unfazed.

In what looked like a track meet early, Buffalo's defense pulverized Tua Tagovailoa for three quarters and won 48-20 in Highmark Stadium. Through three games, he'd been sacked once and hit five times, but the Bills dropped Tagovailoa four times and hit him nine times. Tagovailoa also fumbled once (he recovered it) and threw an interception.

Bills linebacker Matt Milano amassed 10 tackles and a forced fumble, while linebacker Terrel Bernard's recovery gave him at least one takeaway for a third straight game. Edge rusher Greg Rousseau had two sacks.

A ways to go to reach all-time scoring high in Dolphins-Bills series

There have been 68 points scored so far in today’s Dolphins-Bills game. That is certainly a very high scoring total, but it is only tied for eighth in terms of total points scored in a game in the Miami-Buffalo series that dates back to 1966.

The all-time high in that category is 82 points, which occurred on two occasions (1966 and 2021).

Stefon Diggs matches career high

Bills WR Stefon Diggs has matched his career high with three touchdown receptions today against the Dolphins.

Diggs last hit the mark in Week 2 of last season against the Titans. He also hit it against the Patriots in Week 15 of 2020 and against the Eagles in Week 6 of 2019 while a member of the Vikings.

Tre'Davious White, the Buffalo Bills' best cornerback, suffered an injury and was carted off the field with 39 seconds left in the third quarter of the Bills' game against the Dolphins. Distraught, White flung his helmet 20 yards and punched at the Highmark Stadium turf after a non-contact injury to his right ankle.

White suffered a torn ACL on Thanksgiving of 2021 and returned last year to play the final six regular-season games and both playoff games. He had been performing increasingly well. At the time of his injury, he had three tackles, a pass breakup and a quarterback hit to help the Bills build a 41-20 lead. White recorded an end-zone interception in last week's victory over the Commanders.

The Bills' other starting cornerback, Christian Benford, suffered a shoulder injury in the second quarter but returned to the game.

Josh Allen continues to roll

Josh Allen just opened the fourth quarter with a rushing touchdown that put the Bills up 48-20. Allen now has five total touchdowns in this game. He's 20-for-23 passing for 318 yards and four touchdowns to go with 17 yards rushing and a score.

Buffalo now has eight scoring drives in this game, has only punted once and has not turned the football over in this game. This is the most complete game we've seen from Allen all season.

Top five career fantasy game for Bills QB Josh Allen

Bills QB Josh Allen has racked up a lot of great fantasy point totals in his career, but today is closing in on the best of his career, as his 11-yard rushing touchdown that put Buffalo up 48-20 has resulted in 36.42 fantasy points. That is the fifth highest single-game fantasy point total of his career and is only one tenth of a point away from his fourth best mark.

Tremendous coverage metrics for Bills CB Tre’Davious White

Bills CB Tre’Davious White was just carted off the field. His loss is a huge one for Buffalo, as White has posted tremendous coverage metrics this season.

Per Pro Football Reference, through the first three weeks of the season White had allowed eight completions on 13 targets but gave up only 48 yards on those throws. That equates to a superb 3.7 yards per target pace that was the highest on the Bills roster in that span.

Coverage of this caliber is extremely difficult to replace, so if White is out for a while, it is a huge loss for the Buffalo secondary.

Bills WR Stefon Diggs approaching career high in fantasy points

Bills WR Stefon Diggs just caught his third touchdown pass of the day and is now approaching his career high in PPR points, as his 36.0 mark in that category ranks as his fifth best game in PPR points. Diggs will need 8.9 more to top his 44.8-PPR point mark from Week 2 of the 2022 season in a game against Tennessee.

Bills QB Josh Allen has also generated a huge point total, as his 27.96 points puts Allen in range to post his 16th career game with 30 or more fantasy points.

Everything going right for Bills

The Bills are reminding everyone why they're a perennial Super Bowl contender today.

Josh Allen's playing like the MVP — he's got more touchdowns (four) than incompletions (three) so far — Stefon Diggs has three touchdowns and Sean McDermott's defense is frustrating Tua Tagovailoa and the Dolphins.

Bills are 19-0 when scoring 34+ points against Miami

The Bills have now reached the 34-point mark in their contest against the Dolphins, as a Tyler Bass field goal has vaulted Buffalo to a 34-20 lead.

History suggests that will be more than enough for the Bills, as Buffalo is 19-0 all-time against Miami when scoring 34 or more points (per Pro Football Reference).
