The M113 APC has been in the news recently as new rules from the Federal government have declared that tracked armored vehicles are no longer to be used by police departments. Over the past two decades, the M113 armored personnel carrier has been among the surplus military items that the DOJ distributed to police departments as part of the 1033 program. Due to concerns about the militarization of police forces, the Obama administration issued restrictions this year regarding specific pieces of military equipment currently owned by police departments. One of the now forbidden items are “tank-like armored vehicles that move on tracks.” The M113 is the primary vehicle that falls into this category. As far as we know, this rule does not apply to the various MRAP vehicles that have been distributed to police. Reaction to the new rules have been mixed, some police departments saying the tracked APCs were costly to maintain and seldom used while other departments have spoken out against the ban saying it jeopardizes office safety.

Tank and AFV News 
I remember waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in the 1980s, living in Los Angeles, the LAPD made major waves when they not only acquired an M-114 but also put a battering ram on it to allow it to crash through a gated crack house, warrant in hand, of course! This vehicle was further publicized and memorialized for posterity by being featured in the Tom Hanks-Dan Akroyd comedy “Dragnet”.

The background picture is probably at M59, not a M113. The picture shows dual support rollers, which the M59 has but not the M113. FYI.

The title says tanks and APC’s but there are no tanks shown. com’n Knuckleheads, quit spectacularizing your story with untruths. All vets recognise your stupidity – APC’s can’t play with tanks (Unless they’re on the same side).

The title of this site is ‘Tank and AFV News”, not “tanks and APC’s”. The title of this particular post is “Police M113 Gallery.” I would think it rather obvious why there are no tank pictures in this post when the title clearly states that it is about M113 vehicles in Police service.

When I was in the army I drove all of the APCs,but the one APC was 578 and 114 and 113. I really miss it, but I was crushed by the 113 and the 577 I lived through it. Maybe before I go to Tennessee I would love to sit in the 578. Please get back to me soon text me.Anthony
