Anubias Hastifolia is an aquatic plant native to tropical central and western Africa. This epiphytic plant is commonly seen in rivers and streams, but it can grow in a wide variety of settings.  It is most frequently seen in aquariums since it can grow completely submerged in water and is slow growing.  Anubias come in many sizes. The hastifolia variety has wider leaves than most and can get up to 18 inches tall. It is very easy to care for, and its luscious green leaves will brighten any surrounding environment. It also has the ability to flower. If you are a beginner aquatic plant parent, then this is where you should start!

Best Locations For Growing Anubias Hastifolia

Anubias hastifolia is an aquatic plant known for its ability to easily grow in aquariums. It is a slow grower, producing about 1 leaf per month, which makes it ideal for aquascapes.  Midground to background is the recommended placement for this plant when growing it in an aquarium with other plants. If growing in a tank with fish, we recommend using a tank that will hold 20 gallons of water for every anubias plant. Any smaller will hinder the fish’s ability to move freely and restrict water filtration. You can wedge this plant between some rocks, tuck it into some gravel or sand, or attach it to some driftwood. Whatever you choose, remember its natural habitat; moving water. It will naturally grow roots and attach itself to its surroundings, preventing it from floating away.

Anubias Hastifolia Sunlight Requirements

This plant does not require a lot of light. Too much light will cause algae growth, which prevents it from properly photosynthesizing. Amano shrimp are great at keeping algae under control in a tank. If other plants in the tank require more light than the hastifolia, consider adding floating foliage to provide it shade.

Anubias Hastifolia Care

Anubias plants have a broad, horizontal stem called a rhizome from which all of their leaves and roots emerge; this stem should never be covered when planting! Make sure you only bury the roots of the plant and leave the rhizome on top of the substrate.Rhizomes that are covered will quickly rot and die. Propagation is simple and can be accomplished by stem cutting or rhizome division.

Watering Anubias Hastifolia

Anubias hastifolia prefers to grow in water that is around 70 to 85 °F, and has a pH of 6 to 8.   For healthy growth, be sure that the water has enough beneficial nutrients and is being properly filtered.

Feeding Anubias Hastifolia

Anubias Hastifolia needs iron, magnesium, and potassium for good leaf growth. Out of those minerals, iron is the most essential for its growth. If fish cohabitate with the anubias, fertilizer is generally not required because their food and waste can supply the nutrients the plant needs to survive. You might need to supplement by using a high-quality aquarium fertilizer if the plant is growing among many other plants that absorb or require more nutrients.

Plant Shipping

Below are some factors we consider when determining when to ship the plants depending on the timing of the order.

Winter to Early Spring

We ship only when it's warm enough to plant in your growing zone.
Sometimes plants aren't completely ready to sell and ship in early spring. We will wait until the plants are ready before shipping so you don't get a subpar product.
For Southern plants we will be able to ship much earlier than plants coming from our northern nursery.

Summer

If there is extreme heat we may delay shipping for a week or several weeks.
We review what areas the plants are traveling through as well as your location.

Fall into Winter

We’ll ship plants out all the way up to the end of the fall planting season!

Winter

Get your order in early to reserve your plants for Spring planting!

Once your plant is shipped you’ll receive an automated email with tracking information.
