On this Friday we departed from the port of Barcelona on a 72°F day with passing clouds. Headed for the hillside Monastery of Montserrat aka serrated mountain standing 2,300 feet above sea level.
In transit to the Benedictine Abbey of Santa Maria at Montserrat Mountain
1 hour ride
During the drive to Monserrat, we learned that although originally constructed in the 16th Century the Monastery actually showcases a more modern architecture. This is because the Monastery was destroyed by Napoleon during the Peninsular War and rebuilt.
While winding back and forth up the mountain road, we caught views of Santa Cova and Sant Miquel’s Cross. The later was situated along the Medieval Path to Montserrat.
Tip: On the way to Montserrat the left side of the bus proved best for views.

The Main Plaza
After passing through del Abat Argeric square and entering the atrium we immediately got in the visitor’s line for close-up viewing of Our Lady of Montserrat aka the Virgin of Montserrat. The Monastery is fabled to have been built around this statue about 880 A.D.

Then we entered the Basilica and marveled at its sheer magnificence.
The main alter is adoringly decorated depicting several biblical scenes with a cross from the 15th century. Just above the main altar stands Our Lady of Montserrat.

Grounds, Gift Shop and Artisan Booths
Next we wondered around the grounds, gift shop and local artisan booths. There was a cable car over the hillside that we were told afforded breathtaking views of the Abbey.
Unfortunately, on this tour there was no time to ride either the Cable Car or the Sant Joan funicular railway.
The Sant Joan funicular railway leads to the path of Sant Jeroni the highest summit at Montserrat. To reach this summit, you have to take an additional 2.5 hour hike after exiting the funicular. To learn more about all the great walking paths around Montserrat, this is a great resource.
