RESULTS: 2023 All-American 3-Am Scramble

NOHIO.GOLF Tournament Series26 teams tried their best to conquer Rawiga Golf Club on July 1st in the All-American 3-Am Scramble, and two came out tied at the top.

Playing in the second group of the day, Chase Helmling of Mentor, Cody Nickson of Kent and Trevor Consavage of Hinckley used a chip-in eagle at the par-4 14th (good for a $780 skin winner!) to post the leading score in the clubhouse at 15-under par and set the bar for the teams for the rest of the day.

Only one other team would match that score — the second last group of the day.

Rob Wakeling, Zach Drukenbrod, Mike Simpson

Mike Simpson of Uniontown, Zach Drukenbrod of Canton and Rob Wakeling of Hudson finished at 15-under par as well, and actually had a great chance to get to 16-under near the end of their round. They had a downhill 15-footer at the par-5 16th hole they couldn’t coax in for eagle, with much gratitude from the T3 finishers of Ben Foltz of Chagrin Falls, Jay Magyari of Sagamore Hills and Andrew Kaye of Avon Lake, who made eagle there earlier. That eagle held up as a winner for the other half of the day’s skins pot, good for $780.

Andrew Kaye and Ben Foltz
Andrew Kaye hits a shot in a downpour as teammate Ben Foltz watches on.

Foltz, Magyari and Kaye had the most interesting finish of the day, as a huge downpour hit the golf course just before they were ready to hit their second shots at the 18th hole. Instead of hunkering down somewhere in the trees, the trio decided to play on. The rain came down so hard so fast that there was standing water on the green as they played their wedge shots in. The best they could do was as a three-skip hydro-plane to 15 feet. But putting third, Kaye knocked home the birdie to get the trio to their 14-under par T3 finish.

Malkus, Malkus Wadsworth
Ryan Malkus rolls a birdie effort as Andrew Malkus and Bobby Wadsworth watch the line.

Later in the day, with the weather cooperating once again, the team of Andrew Malkus and Ryan Malkus of Maple Heights and Bobby Wadsworth of North Canton had their own putt to tie for a share of the win at the 18th green. They had knocked a shot to 12 feet to give them a solid look, but couldn’t get the ball to fall and had to settle for a T3.

Thanks to Sean Croell for his help with the NOGA Live Scoring, and to host PGA pro Bill Colianni and the rest of the Rawiga staff for the fun setup and fine course conditions.

The next NOHIO.GOLF Tournament Series event will be a 2-Player Better Ball at Oak Shadows Golf Club in New Philadelphia on Saturday, September 23rd with tee times starting at noon. The Series looks forward to playing the beautiful Oak Shadows layout for the first time ever, as our initial attempt last season was rained out. Entries for that event will open during the first week of September.
