Leopards Drop Doubleheader at Stony Brook

Chmielewski records five hits between both games

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Lafayette baseball team was defeated by Stony Brook in a doubleheader on Friday at Joe Nathan Field, losing 11-6 and 9-7.  

In game one, Stony Brook jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the first.

In the top of the third, Lafayette got on the board. Sophomore Kaleb Willis singled to right field and scored junior Ben Petrone from second, who had reached base on a double, narrowing the Stony Brook lead to 2-1.

In the bottom of the third, the Seawolves added a run on a solo home run to left field, giving Stony Brook a 3-1 lead.

The Leopards scored again in the fifth. Senior Kyle Chmielewski doubled down the right field line to start the action. Later in the inning, junior Blaze Fadio hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Chmielewski from third and making the tally 3-2.

In the top of the seventh, Chmielewski hit an RBI-double down the right field line, plating freshman Parker Walsh from second. Fadio hit an RBI-single that scored Chmielewski and gave Lafayette its first lead of the game 4-3.

In the bottom of the seventh, Stony Brook scored six runs to take back the lead, 9-4. The Seawolves also added two more runs in the eighth, extending their lead to 11-4.

Lafayette came back and scored two more runs in the ninth. Chmielewski crossed home via a bases-loaded balk, and Willis came around to score on an RBI-ground out by junior Justin Grech, bringing the final tally to 11-5.

Senior Josh O'Neill picked up the win for the Seawolves and junior Adam Bogosian took the loss.

In game two, Stony Brook scored first in the bottom of the second to take a 1-0 lead.

Lafayette tied the game in the third. Willis ripped a double to center field and then came around to score on an RBI-single by Fadio, tying the game 1-1.

Stony Brook responded to take back the lead in the fourth, scoring one run in the fourth and adding three more runs in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead.

In the sixth, Grech doubled to lead off the inning. Walks to senior Pete Ciuffreda and sophomore Michael Zarrillo loaded the bases for Petrone, who hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Grech. Chmielewski then ripped an RBI-single to center field, cutting the Stony Brook lead to 5-3.

Stony Brook added another run in the seventh and three more runs in the eighth, to take a 9-3 lead.

In the ninth, Willis doubled to right center field, Fadio walked and Grech hit an RBI-single to left field. Senior Seif Ingram blasted a three-run home run to left field, making the score 9-7. The Leopards were not able to plate any more runs in the ninth, leaving the final score at 9-7.

Graduate student Ben Fero was credited with the win for Stony Brook and sophomore J. T. Raab earned a save. Luke Craytor took the loss for Lafayette.

The Leopards will conclude their series with Stony Brook at noon on Sunday.
