Viticulture

There is only a small amount of viticulture due to the difficult climate and soil conditions. An old, once important wine-growing region is located in the German-speaking colony of Independencia in the department of Guairá, 180 kilometres east of the capital Asunción. It was founded in 1919 by German winegrowers from Baden-Württemberg. Viticulture flourished and the vineyards grew to 4,000 hectares. In 2021, however, the vineyards only covered 377 hectares and the wine production volume was 17,000 hectolitres. One of the few winegrowers is German-born Gerhard Bühler, who produces a quality red wine from Cabernet Sauvignon.
