I’ve had my Sony Ericsson K800i phone for over a year now and yesterday I found that my phone just wouldn’t charge at all. And as a result I spent the night disconnected from the world, well almost (thank the lord for Facebook). After spending over an hour trying to fiddle the charger connector into all kinds of weird and wonderful angles my phone was still as dead as a dodo. To add insult to injury it didn’t even light up once to say that there was power getting in at any time during the hour.
I’d just about given up on getting my phone charged without taking into the O2 store and having it set off to be fixed.
While at work on my hours lunch break, I thought I would have one last attempt at getting the thing to charge because I had an hour to kill. And by shear luck managed to work out what might have been the problem and got my phone charging.
So here’s how I did it:
Step One: Cleaning The Connectors
- Get a staple (or a paperclip, thanks phil!)
- bend the staple so it’s straight (extra length)
- Now carefully scrape any dirt and fluff off the metal connectors on the bottom of the phone, be careful not to press too hard or you will scratch the metal off and prevent any connection being made.
- Using the same method try to remove any dirt in the rim where the connection is made.
- Now try to charge your phone – No luck? Read on..
Step Two: Cleaning The Charger Holes
Something that I completely overlooked when I was cleaning my phone of dirt was if there was any dirt stuck in the holes that the charger pushes into on the phone.
- Using the staple try to get out all the fluff that gets trapped in the 2 holes either side of the metal connectors.
- This requires some force as the fluff in my phone was well compacted.
- Keep at this for 10minutes, getting into each corner of the hole and pushing hard.
- Now try to charge your phone again.
This final step worked for me and allowed me to once again charge my phone.
I hope this works for you as it did for me. If so drop me a comment, it takes seconds and lets me know that my time wasn’t wasted.
Step Three: Charger Connector/Phone Angles
For those that are still having trouble trying different charging angles can sometimes work a treat. For this the best technique I have found is:
- Place the charger into phone as normal
- Now pull the left side of the charge out leaving the right side in to phone, not pushing or pulling to hard and with a lot of luck your phone might begin charging again.
Step 4: Cleaning The Inside Of The Phone (Thanks helen)
Helen commented mentioning that she managed to get her phone charging by cleaning the inside of the phone where the battery connects to the phone at its source. Dust and dirt works its way inside the phone over time and it may just be that something is blocking the connection on the inside.
Final Note
I hope that one or more of these techniques get your phone charging again because I know how much of a pain it can be without your phone. If there were any bits you are unsure of or any other techniques that got your phone working again then please leave and comment and I will add/correct/update anything that I can.
I hope this was of help.
All the best.
hey man, thanks for the suggestions. Worked great. Sooo happy my phone will charge now. really appreciate you writting up this fix it page. have a great day.

Brilliance! Thank you so much for taking the time to write this.
Hey thanks so much, I ve been having so much trouble with my ohone getting it to charge, I had to sit there and hold it in all kinds of crazy positions, thank god it charges fast, but lately it stopped, so thats so much for the tip, I knew dirt was in there, but didnt think to use a staple to get it out! Amazing!!
I have to admit I was skeptical with this but sheeesh, it worked. Thanks a lot 🙂
HA! It works! I can’t believe it but it works! Steps one and two completed with a paper clip instead of a staple…plugged it in and now its glowing happily. Top stuff! Thanks for the tips!
Glad it helped 😀
Nice thinking phil!
I just cannot belive this works, I been on it a hour tryin to get my phone to charge, simple clean out with a pin and it was on its way to working again I am sooo thankfull that people like you exist!!
Hey thanks, but my charger is not PHYSICALLY fitting in the phone. Any ideas? Maybe the charger was crushed. Thanks.
Unfortunately cleaning the charger holes didnt work for me, although I was amazed at the amount of fluff that kept on coming out! Luckily though, step 3 did work, and its now charging away happily 🙂 Thanks for the help!
Thank you so much! Had a go at the power charger with an old brooch pin and its charging away brilliantly. Thanks for taking the time to write this up.
Aimee
You are a hero! 🙂
btw! if all that didn’t work? try spirit/alcohol(IPA)to clean the connectors..
It worked for me!
Thanks so much! It’s charging on my USB cable now. Loathe to try it on the main charger in case it doesn’t work…
Fingers crossed!
Thanks for writing this!
I tried and it did work at first but later i discovered the charges right plug was broken and getting a new changer fixed my problem. Grate post tho!
It works 🙂
thanks mate.. i was about to give up and it worked..!
thanks for this mate !
It worked. I almost gave up, because it didn’t work the first time, but I decided to dig deep and pulled out some nasty gunk from the side charger holes, and now it’s glowing blue!
Thanks so much!
Did not work for me, HELP!!!
I thought my phone was broken, until I found this. worked like a treat. Thanks! 🙂
Thanks, I broke my Samsung D900 and my brothers phone wouldn’t charge. Mobile phones are my alarm clock though… thanks to your tutorial I got it charging and will now be up again for work and uni.
I’ve had this problem for months now, I’ve been cleaning and cleaning the stuff from the chargers holes, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes if i put the charger to my mouth and suck air though it like a vacuum it works, a staple seems too big to fit in the small holes between the charger bars so I thought maybe a dry soft tooth brush? Anyway, if so many people are having this problem should the company not try to find a solution for us? like perhaps a cover that fits over the charger holes so when it’s in a purse or pocket gunk does not get in it? thanks for the tips 🙂
Thank YOU SO MUCH!

My wife’s Ericsson just stopped charging. Googled “Ericsson won’t charge”, this page was the second link. Tried your method and got it charging in 5 minutes. Brilliant! Thank you for writing this up.
Oh no =/ My W760i can’t charge even after I ‘cleaned’ the connecters. (Because no dirt came out) Maybe it’s jut the lousy phone model but.. I’m not so sure! Now my battery seems to be stuck at 26% and I’ve got school tomorrow!

hey! this is brilliant, i sent my phone away to be fixed for this reason….it came back completely the same. Then i read this. It still didnt work, but it did make a little red light appear, but did not make it charge. Then i decided to open the phone up and cleaned the inside, where the actual battery connects with the phone, and TA-DA it worked perfect!
It is now charging!

better use a WD40 .Its a liquid dat clears all rusty particles . make contact bttr.spray very little near chargn place
What has worked for me was messing with the two charger connector pins. I accidentally bent one a little bit to a side, but before returning it back into original position, I tried charging the phone like that and it actually worked!
I guess the pins just deteriorate with time or whatever, I really have no clue. But I’m happy as long as it works. It’s a common problem with Sony Ericsson phones.
I thank you very much for this fantastically useful guide, hot my c902 fixed up in no time 🙂

Sir, i salute you! My K800 had the same problem just this morning so I immediately checked for tips on how to treat this problem. Found some suggestions from simple to complicated but your suggestion got my phone charging. The simplest yet the best answer. I learned one thing from this: always pay importance to the fundamentals. Thanks sir.
Only using one side of the charger, fixed my issue. Cheers!

Hey Jamie,

Cheers, seemed to have fixed my Sony Ericsson K770i.
Great fix. Knew it already and tried it before but you gave me the hope I needed to try again.
Nice one dude.
You are a life saver. I had been doing some of what you suggested already with no luck. Then I found your advice and carefully followed your instructions and hey presto now I have a charging phone. Thank you so much for posting.

It worked on the first attempt, thanks for your help.
YOU’RE SUCH A LIFE SAVER AH I LOVE YOU !!!!!!
It was the pulling the left side out that worked and ive managed to let go of the phone slowly and it stayed in that position and is now charging WAHEYYY xxxxxxxxxxxxx
Yay charging now!!!
Hey mate! THANKS FOR THE HELP!
thx alot..!!! my phone is charging again..<3
k810 charging but charge not save
Saved my bacon – was running out of patience with all the funny angles and wrap-around-cable techniques needed to get my K800i to charge….finally a very common-sense, yet un thought of solution!
Thank you so very much!
Matt
I have a different phone (Sony ericsson) and was having the same problem Blew out all available holes, took out battery and did the same. Place it all back and wow! it is charging! Thanks for the blog.
Hi all. I had the exact same problem. However I came up with another solution. I took a piece of small-grained sandpaper and sanded the charger-connectors ‘flat’. That way the connectors doesn’t into the same used spots on the fastport. It works!
YOU ARE A LEGEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!! I HOPE YOU HAVE A LONG LIFE BECAUSE U ARE A GREAT MAN
Before I read this article I had already tried cleaning the phoneconnector and the charger. I also messed about with the angles. Nothing worked anymore. Then I read this and tried cleaning the inside of my phone. I didn’t believe this would work, but it did! I never would’ve thought about that. I’ve been annoyed with my phone and charger for months! Thanks, man =)
Thanks for the advice – we were just about to completely give up on it!
Thanks Heaps…After i cleaned it it still didn’t work. So I had to take out my battery and reinsert it before it started working
Totally worked. Quite surprised. Thanks man – saved me a headache!!!!!!!!
It works great. Thanks.
All methods works, but I recommend using a toothpick instead of a paperclip (less risk of damaging the connector) 🙂
After reading about your efforts I used a few puffs of lens cleaner and a plastic toothpick to clean out the phone’s port. Worked right away after being stuck all day at 0 % charge! Never would have thought it got dirty enough in there to cause a complete stoppage. Thanks for post!
Didnt work for me, but a bit of tin foil between connectors when charging does!
