Myriophyllum mattogrossense is native to Mato Grosso in Brazil’s Rio Amazonas region. It has finely divided bright green leaves and feathery reddish stems (30-60 cm long). The leaves spread out in a fan shape in bright light. Myriophyllum is a straightforward plant that works well as a backdrop. It must be trimmed on a regular basis to maintain its bushy shape. It grows quickly and consumes a lot of nutrients.
This is a good first plant.

Until true green Myriophyllum mattogrossense was imported into Germany from Ecuador, this name was used for the Red Milfoil (Myriophyllum tuberculatum). Milfoil is a very decorative light green milfoil that is popular in aquascaping. M. mattogrossense requires a steady supply of nutrients. Myriophyllum mattogrossense is native to South America’s tropical lowlands. Despite the fact that its name is well-known in the hobby, this species is relatively new as an aquarium plant. For about 20 years, the red milfoil Myriophyllum tuberculatum was (and occasionally still is) sold incorrectly as M. mattogrossense. A.E. Orchard correctly identified red milfoil as M. tuberculatum in 1994. Christel Kasselmann was the first to import true M. mattogrossense from Eduador in 1990. Because of its beauty and ease of cultivation, it has grown in popularity ever since. It is now fairly common in commerce.

This milfoil is one of the easier plants to grow. However, at least medium light (0.5 watts per litre or higher) should be provided. M. mattogrossense thrives in medium-light tanks with no CO2 injection. This milfoil will grow healthy, large, green leaf whorls even in these conditions. It grows faster and has larger leaves when exposed to more light and continuous CO2 fertilisation.
M. mattogrossense is not picky when it comes to nutrients; all it really needs is a little NO3 and PO4. The stems grow larger and more robust at higher nitrate (around 10 mg/l) and phosphate (1-2 mg/l) levels. If the shoot tips turn white, the plant requires iron and micronutrients immediately.

Because of its rapid growth, M. mattogrossense must be pruned frequently. Remove the shoot tip and replant it in the substrate, or discard it and allow the rest of the plant to regrow. Because of the large number of lateral shoots that can be used as cuttings, propagation is very simple.

This plant hasn’t been used much in Nature Aquaria or Dutch-style tanks, despite its finely structured leaves and lush green color, which give it a lot of potential as a background or filler plant. It is also an excellent choice for beginning hobbyists looking for an easy-to-care-for, fast-growing, and highly attractive stem plant.

Is CO2 required by Myriophyllum Mattogrossense?
Myriophyllum mattogrossense is a relatively simple plant to cultivate. It grows quickly and requires only moderate lighting. There is no need for a CO2 system, but having one will allow it to grow faster.

How should I grow Myriophyllum Mattogrossense?
Remove the entire plant from the one two grow cup by carefully peeling off the lid. Wash the growth off the plant in a bowl of water.

Is CO2 required by Myriophyllum Tuberculatum?
It requires intense lighting with at least 0.8 watts per litre, and CO2 injection is required.
