1981 Jeep CJ-7 Laredo 4-Speed

This 1981 Jeep CJ-7 Laredo was first sold by Papa’s Dodge and Jeep in New Britain, Connecticut, which subsequently owned the truck from 1984 until it was acquired by the selling dealer in January 2023. Now showing 42k miles, it is finished in black with a black hardtop over black vinyl upholstery, and it is powered by a 4.2-liter inline-six linked with a four-speed manual transmission and a dual-range transfer case. Side steps, dual mirrors, chrome 15″ steel wheels, front disc brakes, power steering, a heater, a center console with an armrest, and an AM/FM radio are additional elements. Work in preparation for the sale included wiring repairs and replacing the heater core and box along with ignition components and the battery. This CJ-7 is now offered with copies of 1981 and 1984 paperwork, manufacturer’s literature, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Michigan title.

The truck was delivered from the factory in Classic Black (P1) and was repainted under previous ownership. Features include a removable black hardtop, a chrome grille, black wheel-arch extensions, side steps, and dual mirrors.

Chrome 15″ steel wheels are wrapped in 235/75 BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain T/A tires with 2022 date codes, and a Goodyear Wrangler spare is mounted on the swing-away tire carrier. The truck is equipped with manually locking front hubs and power steering. Stopping power is provided by power-assisted front discs and rear drums.

The cabin features high-back front bucket seats and a rear bench trimmed in black vinyl with gray inserts. Appointments include a passenger grab bar, a heater and defroster, a roll bar, an AM/FM radio, and a center console with an armrest. The clock does not work.

A three-spoke steering wheel is mounted to a tilting column and fronts a tachometer, while an 85-mph speedometer with inset readouts for coolant temperature and fuel level is centrally mounted on the dashboard along with an ammeter and an oil temperature gauge. The five-digit odometer shows 42k miles, a handful of which were added by the selling dealer.

The 4.2-liter inline-six retains its plastic valve cover and smog air pump. The selling dealer notes that service in preparation for the sale included wiring repairs and an oil change in addition to replacing the heater core and box, distributor cap and rotor, spark plugs, and battery.

Power is sent to the rear or all four wheels through a four-speed Tremec T-176 manual transmission, a Dana 300 transfer case, a Dana 30 front axle, and an AMC 20 rear axle with 3.73:1 gearing. Additional underbody photos are included below.

The Carfax report shows no accidents or damage and lists history in Michigan beginning in January 2023.
