Fire Dartfish

Nemateleotris magnifica

White front, red body rear, dark tail root.

Size : 8 cm

Habitat : Prefer outer reef slopes, 5-60 m. Adults usually in pairs. Usually hovers a half-metre above sand or rubble ground and feeds on plankton. Frequently snaps the long first fin ray up and down.

Distribution : East Africa to SW Japan, Hawaii, New Caledonia and French Polynesia.
