Story of Chilli and Coleus

..and a little bit of something else

Coleus

I haven’t started any coleus from seeds this year, I bought 2 small plants and 2 seedlings from Bunning’s, two were bought about 2 months ago and the other two about a month ago and they have grown bigger. I planted all coleus in potting mix with slow-released fertilizer. The brand I use should feed the plants for about 4 months, well that’s what the label says anyway.

I’ve been trying to name the varieties of coleus I have.. I managed to find 3 out of the 4

Aurora Black Cherry

Aurora Black Cherry

This is the first small-leaf coleus I ever have. This one is called Aurora Black Cherry Coleus. It can handle a bit of sun and doesn’t wilt when exposed to sunlight. I put it in a corner on the patio where it gets about an hour of direct morning sun. Because of its compactness and small leaves, it feels like it takes such a long time for this coleus to grow.

Beckwith's Gem

Beckwith’s Gem

Beckwith’s Gem. Now with this one, I have to make sure it’s protected from direct sunlight at all times. I once put it at the same corner where Aurora Black Cherry is and within 10 minutes the leaves wilted!

Wizard Jade/Wizard Coral Sunrise

Wizard Jade/Wizard Coral Sunrise

This one above is a little interesting. When I bought the seedling, it looked exactly like this, 2 different colours. They must have put two seedlings in one pot! It’s like I bought one and got one for free! 😀 The green one aka Wizard Jade seems to grow a little faster than Coral Sunrise. These two can tolerate some sun, so I put it side by side with Aurora Black Cherry.

The last coleus I want to show you is this one:

I’m not sure what type of coleus this is. Is it rainbow? I don’t even know if rainbow is a proper name for one of those coleus varieties. When I bought this plant, the leaves had more green colour on it, you might be able to see a few leaves with more green than the rest. But since I put this coleus in a spot with quite a bit of direct sunlight, the colour gradually changed to lighter. So if anyone can help me name this one, please.. be my guest! 🙂
