I made a quick video showing the basic technique of how this might be accomplished in GIMP.

There is no sound, just video.

Saulgoode , brilliant.
I especially liked the use of the polar/circular grid. Never saw a use for it and forgot it existed.

Great video tutorial and excellent results as usual from saulgoode.

2-ton,

The video is in OGG format. It is an open source and (supposedly) patent free video format. I say supposedly because the issue of patents regarding computer technologies is a murky area at best. I do not know what players a MAC can use to play OGG video files. Do you have either VLC or Totem available for a MAC? Both of those video players play OGG video files. I don't know if you need to add codecs for those players to play the files properly or not on a MAC. Hopefully one of our MAC users here can help you with a specific player for OGG video files.

:)

You might try installing the Xiph Quicktime components. If that does not work, the Firefox, Chrome, and Opera webbrowsers should all support HTML5+Theora video. If you are unwilling to use any of those browsers then you will have to download the file and play it using VLC, Mplayer, or some other Theora capable video player.

You might consider submitting a request to Apple that they include Theora support in Safari and Imovie.

I don't have a mac, but I'm assuming, going by the impression that I have of you and your computer knowledge (Feel free to slap me if I'm wrong.), that you are using safari as browser and mostly all the default settings.
And I think Safari will use Quicktime for video files that are played inside the browser, not sure. But if so, you might just have to install the ogg codec. Found this website.
http://xiph.org/quicktime/download.html

I would try "Mac OS X, only decoders". But at your own risk. I don't know anything about Macs.

edit,
Guess it's worth a try since PC (the first link on the site he links to) and saulgoode also point to the same website.

This is a great tutorial, saulgoode. I was very impressed by the actions in Gfig. I just don't understand why Gfig doesn't have greater control on smoothing or sharpening of the edges of strokes and fills. It's like they developed it up to a point and just stopped, leaving it half completed. If users were able to save the strokes/fill areas to paths within Gfig, it would be a great addition to it.

I love simplicity. So I used your (saulgoode's) zig zag technique, with settings on sine, and then applied a repeat metallic linear gradient. 2 steps.

VLC will play about anything on a mac.
the other thing you might need is FLIP for mac.
But VLC is the go for me

Saul this link seems to no longer open the correct page.
Can you fix it please?

Thanks.

That is a different tutorial (which I named rather poorly).

Unfortunately, I lost my flashingtwelve website soon after posting the original tutorial and I do not have ready access to it. Presumably it is on a backup DVD somewhere but I am not sure where.

If anyone has a downloaded copy of the tutorial, please PM me.
